Chapter 1336: It Has Nothing to Do with You
Hearing the endless sorrow in Zhang Ning's weeping, Lu Yun immediately snapped back to focus, his voice filled with fierce determination. "Ning姐, what's going on? Did Zhang Brother treat you badly? I'll go find him right away..."
Lu Yun simply couldn't bear to see women crying—when he saw Zhang Ning weeping, her face already worn and weary, it only deepened his heartache. With a surge of passion, he immediately rushed out to confront Zhang Yi.
Yet, did he really think that, even if there were disagreements between Zhang's siblings, did he have any right at all to scold Zhang Yi?
Holding Lu Yun tightly, Zhang Ning shook her head, still unable to speak, her voice choked with emotion, only gazing at him through blurred, tear-streaked eyes.
Lu Yun was puzzled. Though there were many small, clumsy cats in the school who were fond of Zhang Ning's beauty, no one dared to approach her or even make a move—thanks to Zhang Yi, in their eyes a towering figure with the strength to lift mountains and the ferocity of a living Yanshang, who seemed ready to devour anyone with a single glance. Who else could it be? Lu Yun murmured to himself, "If not Zhang Yi, then who? I came here specifically at my sister-in-law's request, to see you. Surely she wouldn't be treating you unfairly." While it was common in the village for tensions to arise between sister-in-law and brother-in-law, or even for them to clash fiercely, Lu Yun believed that Liu Yun would surely not be making life difficult for Zhang Ning. "Then, who exactly has been causing you such hardship? Tell me, and I'll go confront that stubborn fool and settle the score for Ning, so she can have her justice." Lu Yun wiped the traces of tears from Zhang Ning's face with a firm yet tender hand.
Zhang Ning shook her head again, yet her gaze toward Lu Yun flickered with hesitation, a gentle blush rising on her worn cheeks. Seeing Zhang Ning's transformation, Lu Yun stood still, thinking to himself: Oh my goodness, what a storm this has been—clear skies one moment, then thunder and rain pouring down the next! You've managed it, but I can't bear this constant turmoil. Noticing Lu Yun's growing concern, Zhang Ning finally lowered her head with a touch of youthful bashfulness, speaking softly, "I... I miss you..."
Hearing this, Lu Yun nearly fainted, but once he confirmed Zhang Ning's words, his heart immediately lightened, and his anxiety eased. He chuckled, a mischievous smile playing on his lips, saying, "Ah-ha, so it's been missing you all along! It seems my dear sister Zhang has developed a case of longing!"
With that, Lu Yun reached out and gently enveloped Zhang Ning in his arms.
To Land Yun's surprise, who had originally intended to take advantage of Zhang Ning's situation, he suddenly heard a soft, barely audible gasp of pain from her. If not for Land Yun's significantly improved hearing compared to before, he would have almost overlooked it, given that Zhang Ning was deeply immersed in excitement. Drawing on his experience from the previous time, Land Yun furrowed his brows, loosened his arms around Zhang Ning, and was about to speak—when Zhang Ning murmured, as if in a dream, "Hold me." Then, with a look of intoxicating bliss, she pressed her cheek gently against Land Yun's chest.
Upon hearing this, Land Yun gently encircled Zhang Ning's waist with both arms, making every effort to avoid touching her back. Zhang Ning seemed to be thoroughly enjoying this brief moment of warmth and intimacy. Her captivating eyes were slightly closed, and two shimmering tears still glistened on her long lashes. At that very moment, Land Yun's heart gave a sudden, strong flutter.
Things must be far more complicated than Ning sister suggested. I've treated her back injuries twice already—just a few days apart from the last one to this one—and from her recent reaction, it's clear her back is now again covered with those gruesome, terrifying scars. What on earth is going on? How can a girl so graceful and beautiful have so many scars appearing one after another on her back? What could possibly be the reason?
Land Yun roared internally, yet on the surface remained calm and composed, with no visible emotion. Inside, however, his mind was in a state of turbulent waves, crashing and surging.
He glanced down at Zhang Ning, who seemed asleep, and couldn’t bear to disturb her. Perhaps this young woman, only a few years older than himself, was carrying far more than her age could reasonably bear.
Thinking this, Lu Yun tightened his hands around Zhang Ning's slender waist once more, standing still without any change until the classroom bell rang. "Lu Yun, it's time for you to go to class," Zhang Ning looked up at him, her eyes still drowsy. Lu Yun shook his head. "Ning姐, I'm not going to class. I'll stay here with you." "No way," Zhang Ning insisted. "I've already felt much better just seeing you. You need to go now—otherwise, you'll be penalized by the teacher if you're late." After releasing Lu Yun, she pushed him toward the door. "Ning姐, missing one class won't make a difference. But you've been keeping something from me. Until you explain it clearly, I won't leave." Lu Yun was determined to stay. After all, the first class was going to be the one with the crooked chicken. Even if he went, the two of them—already on strained terms—might end up creating more complications. Moreover, Lu Yun genuinely worried about Zhang Ning. He feared that once he left, she would revert to her previous state.
"You've got new bruises on your back. Show me." Saying this, Lu Yun firmly took Zhang Ning's hand and led her to the bedside. Then, with a touch of unyielding yet gentle insistence, he lifted up Zhang Ning's nightgown. Instantly, two long, graceful legs were revealed in the air—now completely exposed, as Zhang Ning was only wearing a thin brief. With Lu Yun's strong yet tender action, Zhang Ning was now fully visible to him. Although they had shared several intimate moments before, they had never quite reached the final step. Now, with Lu Yun so insistently lifting the nightgown, Zhang Ning felt deeply embarrassed and instinctively reached to pull it down.
"Stay still," Lu Yun said seriously. "What I need to see, I'll see clearly. What I don't need to see, I'll completely miss."
Zhang Ning paused slightly, pressed her lips tightly together, and finally gave in.
At this moment, Lu Yun wanted to verify his own thoughts and see if there indeed were fresh, gruesome scars spreading across Zhang Ning's back. His mind was clear and composed, with no hint of any awkward or self-serving intentions. He lifted the nightgown that had been pulled up to her waist a bit higher, and as he did so, his pupils suddenly narrowed. He gritted his teeth and said, "Ms. Zhang, tell me the truth—what exactly happened?"
As expected, Zhang Ning's back was once again covered in scars. Though Lu Yun had only caught a glimpse, he could already see the full picture—just a brief glance was enough to confirm that Zhang Ning's back had returned to its previous state of being scarred.
Zhang Ning remained silent, standing still. The once misty gaze in her eyes now shone with remarkable clarity, filled only with endless suffering and resilience.
"Speak," he said.
Lu Yun was nearly out of control. In front of her was Zhang Ning—the girl she truly admired. For anyone she cared about, Lu Yun would never allow any harm. Yet Zhang Ning’s back bore these unbearable scars, one after another, again and again. Lu Yun’s heart was almost breaking; her voice rose in urgency. After a long silence, Zhang Ning, gazing at Lu Yun’s nearly blazing gaze, finally managed to bite through her resolve: “It has nothing to do with you. You can go now.”
