Chapter 1,697: Mountain Peaks, Palaces, Stone Staircases

Back to Chapter List
"Allow me," Han Li bowed to the two and smiled warmly. "This is merely a minor matter. Since we've already broken the seal, we should now hurry to enter and search for the treasures within. As long as we truly succeed in helping our master and Master Duan locate those few items, we will surely reap great benefits upon our return." Li Shui'er said with a serious expression. Then she folded her gray banner and shot forward as a beam of blue light toward the opening below. Shi Kun, seeing this, did not hesitate and transformed into a sphere of yellow light, closely following behind. Han Li remained calm and composed, raising his head to briefly scan the surroundings with slightly narrowed eyes, confirming there were no immediate concerns, before slowly drifting downward. By this time, Li Shui'er and Shi Kun had already vanished in a flash of light, entering the opening ahead. Han Li moved silently, entering the vast, milky-white aperture. Suddenly, a series of vibrant hues of light surged forth from all around and enveloped him. He was startled, and a shimmer of azure light flashed over his body, instantly forming a translucent, crystalline shield around him. However, the vibrant streaks of light paused momentarily, then quickly coalesced into a series of varying-sized characters, which then spun around Han Li in a circular motion, eventually forming a compact, five-colored light array. Han Li found himself precisely at the center of this array. As the array emitted a resonant hum, waves of spatial disturbances began to ripple outward. Seeing this, Han Li's expression relaxed slightly; he simply straightened his hands behind his back, showing no intention to break the array. Indeed, the next instant, the array burst forth with a brilliant display of five hues of luminous energy. Han Li felt his surroundings slightly blur and his head spin, then vanished completely within the array. Moments later, as his eyelids fluttered open, he found himself on a foreign, elevated platform. The entire platform was constructed from massive blocks of dark stone, bearing some decorative patterns, though not particularly refined—giving off a sense of raw, rustic simplicity. And beneath him stood a teleportation array no more than two zhang in diameter, with a sloping staircase nearby leading directly down to the platform. Han Li merely glanced at the array and the stone platform before quickly turning his gaze to survey the surroundings in detail. At that moment, he felt as though he had stepped into a completely different realm—the sun hung high in the sky, clear and cloudless, its blue hue exceptionally vivid, and various strange flowers and herbs dotted the ground, occasionally wafting gentle breezes that carried the fragrant scents of blossoms. Yet none of this rivaled the striking presence of a small mountain near the platform! Though not particularly tall, this mountain spanned over ten li in width and possessed an unusually distinct terrain. Its peak rose vertically, sharply and almost like it had been carved by a blade, with a plain, unremarkable stone body. Yet from the summit, a brilliant silver glow radiated, revealing a vast, purple-hued palace that nearly filled the entire upper portion of the mountain. Han Li's gaze sharpened, and he studied the palace from top to bottom for a while before finally focusing again on the grass beneath the stone steps. There, Liu Shui'er and Shi Kun remained still, as if also intently observing the purple palace atop the mountain. As Han Li's expression shifted, he stepped forward and seemed ready to rise directly into the air, descending from the stone platform. Yet, just as his feet lifted a few feet off the ground, his body suddenly shook and he fell back to the ground with a heavy thud, the impact resonating through the entire platform. His form now felt impossibly heavy. Han Li raised his arm and waved it several times in the air, but the movements felt light and unimpeded. A brief surprise flickered across his face, then he remembered something—his body shimmered with a faint green glow, and he gradually floated upward. However, barely a foot above the ground, a powerful force suddenly pressed down upon him without any prior warning. Han Li's body slightly wavered, then quickly stabilized, though his face changed color. He said nothing, relying solely on his strong physique, and continued to rise slowly into the air. As his feet cleared the ground by more than two feet, his form trembled once again, and his body's jade-like glow flashed intensely. Although his face remained unchanged this time, his brows furrowed slightly, and then a blue light flashed in his eyes as he turned to gaze upon himself. "With every catty increase in height, the restraining power doubles. This restriction truly is formidable. If one were to rise several zhang above the ground, even the Saint Clan might not be able to withstand such immense force." Han Li spoke slowly, then a flash of green light passed over him as he repositioned himself and stepped back down to the ground. The yellow glow that had been wrapping around him instantly vanished the moment his feet touched the earth again. "Even with Stone Friend's robust physique, he can only lift himself seven or eight catties off the ground. As for us ordinary upper-clan members, perhaps just three or four catties would be our limit." Liu Shui'er said without turning around, her gaze still fixed firmly on the palace atop the distant mountain peak. Upon hearing these words, Han Li's expression grew serious, but after a brief thought, he said nothing and stepped out of the spell array, walking down the steps of the stone platform to join Shi Kun and Liu Shui'er by their side. "It seems the palace on the mountain must be where the treasures are stored." "What are you two waiting for?" Han Li simply asked, his tone calm and direct. "Indeed, there seem to be other seals here—naturally, we should proceed with caution." Liu Shui'er finally turned her head, drawing her gaze back to Han Li, speaking with serious intent. "The presence of such seals indicates that this place truly holds great treasures. However, if these are seals that prevent the sky from being traversed or similar, one would expect the danger to be relatively manageable, by normal standards." Han Li smiled and replied. "Brother Han, you yourself understand this is only by normal standards! If the owner of this place is truly a true immortal from the True Immortal Realm, how could they possibly follow such ordinary expectations?" Liu Shui'er sighed lightly and responded. "If you two hesitate and merely observe without taking any risks, you will never succeed in retrieving the treasure here. Then, what purpose would it serve for us to have come all this way, facing such significant risks?" Han Li's eyes flashed with subtle brilliance, speaking with clear and unyielding conviction. "Brother Han, your words are most persuasive. Moreover, there are still members of the Jiao Chi clan lingering nearby, which means Shi Kun seemed to have noticed no further dangers, but grew more convinced by Han Li's words. "Since both of you have expressed such strong opinions, I have no objections either. Let us go then," Li Shui'er's face changed several times before, finally making up her mind and agreeing. Upon hearing that Li Shui'er no longer opposed, Shi Kun burst out laughing, then suddenly shook his sleeve, and a dark, solid object shot forth from within it. But as soon as it stepped out of the sleeve, it immediately plummeted heavily to the ground—revealing a massive, black iron automaton shaped like a wolf. "The restrictions here even affect magical artifacts!" Li Shui'er breathed softly, her expression now somewhat concerned. In that case, should any unforeseen danger arise, she would have to rely solely on her own magical power and secret techniques. Han Li, seeing this, also furrowed his brow, feeling a heightened sense of caution. Shi Kun, however, laughed heartily and then stepped forward with a determined stride, leading the way up the mountain. Compared to ordinary cultivators, his robust physical form became a major asset and a decisive advantage when he could no longer utilize his artifacts or treasures. Han Li smiled slightly and then stepped forward to follow. Liu Shui'er's gaze shifted, and she moved silently toward the same direction. Facing them, there was a nearly straight mountain path extending directly to the peak. The path was composed of white stone steps, each about one zhang wide, stretching seamlessly from one to the next. From a distance, it resembled a white serpent coiled across the mountain's ridge, striking a profound impression. Though Han Li and his companions could not fly, their strong physical prowess far surpassed that of ordinary beings, so they need not be intimidated by the path's rugged terrain. They took turns stepping onto the steps and steadily advanced toward the summit. However, as the leading figure, Shi Kun, stepped onto the first step, his expression immediately grew somewhat unusual. Yet his steps did not slow at all, steadily advancing upward along the mountain slope—though his pace had grown noticeably slower than at the beginning. Han Li, trailing behind, noticed this and immediately found it odd. But upon setting his foot firmly upon the first white stone step, he suddenly understood. A sudden suction force appeared, instantly making his legs feel as though they weighed ten thousand jin—far heavier than before, and quite taxing. As he took a few more steps, he soon realized that each successive step generated a slightly stronger suction than the one before. Though this incremental increase was subtle and barely perceptible between a few steps, one simply had to consider that there were tens of thousands of such steps stretching from the mountain base to its peak—this alone would be deeply unsettling. Fortunately, if he remained still, the immense suction force gradually diminished over time, eventually fading completely with sufficient duration. Han Li silently marvelled, yet did not regard it as particularly significant. With his robust physical body, strengthened by the practice of the Buddhist-Saint True Magic Technique, even ordinary saintly clansmen would find him superior. Though these stone steps were indeed unusual, he was confident he could reach the peak without pausing at all. As for Shi Kun, whether he could accomplish the same without rest would depend on whether his earlier display of physical strength still concealed any further capabilities. As for Liu Shui'er, unless she possessed additional means, she could not possibly reach the palace in one continuous effort through sheer physical strength alone. While thinking thus, Han Li continued upward, stepping steadily for several dozen steps, then turned around and glanced back at Liu Shui'er. The girl remained motionless at the first step, as though pondering something, yet the flickering glint in her eyes clearly conveyed her intense frustration.
