Chapter Two Thousand Three Hundred and Forty: The Midnight Shadow

Back to Chapter List
"Although Xueya City is not large, it is the only supply point in the surrounding area—so it's no surprise at all if the Magistrate of the Magic Realm stops by temporarily. Besides, if someone has designs on us, would they dare to seriously offend the Hai family and take action against us? It's precisely the true spiritual bone we stumbled upon by accident this time that's of great significance—it's one of the essential materials required to craft the precious artifact our Hai family is currently preparing. If we can bring it back, the benefits would be incalculable. No matter how difficult, we must absolutely secure this item." The female member of the Magi clan, after a moment of thoughtful consideration, said with a serious expression. "But, Madam! If that person is indeed a Magistrate, how can we possibly obtain this spiritual bone?" The other male member of the Magi clan expressed his concern. "If he truly is a Magistrate, then it would indeed be quite troublesome. This person has the audacity to disregard our Hai family's dignity—such a person is likely one who is independent and comes alone, and thus acts with such unconstrained confidence." "Though he doesn't particularly care about us three here, that doesn't mean he lacks caution toward others..." the female mage scoffed. "Ah, what does the lady mean?" The two male mages paused, exchanged a glance, and looked at each other in surprise. "Go find out the current status of the three brothers from the Nan family. I'll visit the current lord of Xueya City. The Nan family still owes us the Sea family a considerable favor, and as far as I remember, Bing Qianren hails from Tianmang Valley—he wouldn't easily refuse our request. If they agree to assist us, our chances of securing the spiritual bone are quite promising," the female mage said with determination. "This is a splendid strategy! Should the three Nan brothers and Bing Qianren jointly exert pressure, I'm certain the lord won't persist in holding onto a rather unremarkable bone. After all, we haven't come empty-handed in seeking it." One of the male mages exclaimed, clearly delighted. Another person also nodded in agreement. "Since both of you agree there's no issue, let's act immediately. There's currently a surge of beasts near the city, so I believe this person won't be able to leave Blood-Raven City anytime soon. We needn't worry about him departing with the spiritual bones right away." The female mage's expression softened, and she formally issued the instruction. "Yes, Lady." The two male mages bowed and replied. ……At the same time, Han Li had already arrived at a large shop spanning several acres, where he received several blocks of metallic ore from a magian manager, carefully examining them. However, not long after, a look of disappointment crossed his face. He shook his head and returned all the ore to the manager, who was eagerly waiting, then walked away without turning back. The strange magian ore, as expected, turned out to be empty inside—just as anticipated. It seems that finding similar crystals will truly depend on chance. Han Li had not achieved his purpose, and having passed by most of the shops in the city, decided to return directly to his residence without lingering further. The earlier incident in which a magical woman had obstructed him seemed to have passed entirely unnoticed. The half-day passed swiftly, and as the sky began to grow dim, the entire city of Xueya was gradually enveloped in darkness. Aside from the magical guards patrolling the streets, the city grew quiet, and by the time dusk fell, the streets were completely empty. The city once again entered a state of alert. Several hours later, while seated in meditation in his room, Han Li suddenly felt a shift in his expression, his face briefly revealing a look of surprise. Then, with a single hand gesture, a faint emerald glow shimmered over his body and, in an instant, he vanished completely from sight. After a brief moment, a subtle ripple spread out from hundreds of zhang above Han Li's dwelling, and a faint green glow—almost imperceptible—flashed into view, then swiftly vanished like a ghost, darting off toward the horizon, seemingly unaffected by the city's sky-clearing and airspace restrictions. Within just a few breaths, however, a gray glow emerged from another direction, slicing through the sky above Han Li's dwelling with barely a trace, appearing to move even faster than the green glow. Both glows moved silently and were remarkably faint; under the night sky, they were hardly noticeable unless one approached closely—clearly, both had employed some form of concealment technique. As they raced past each other at breathtaking speed, they vanished from the horizon within moments. Only then, as a ripple of space stirred, did a third figure emerge slightly blurred, gazing coldly toward the direction where the two glows had disappeared—none other than Han Li, who had spotted their movements earlier. With Han Li's profoundly strong divine awareness, even without deliberately extending it, nothing within several miles could escape his perception. Though the two fleeing figures had managed to evade the patrols of the magical beings, they could not have concealed themselves from him. With his current divine capabilities, unless the Sage Ancestor himself arrived, he would naturally feel no fear of danger. The fact that the two had previously been unaffected by the city's airspace and sealing restrictions, and had been secretly pursuing one another during the quiet night hours, clearly indicated something unspoken—this had piqued his interest. "Well, it's idle time anyway," Han Li mused quietly at his spot, then murmured a few words to himself. As he moved, his form transformed into a faint streak of emerald light, swiftly pursuing ahead. His divine awareness had already locked onto the two figures ahead. Though he could instantly teleport to catch up with them at any moment, he deliberately slowed his pace, maintaining a steady, unhurried distance behind. He intended to see just how far these two could go, given that Blood Raven City was so small. With Han Li's divine abilities, these two would naturally be unable to sense the presence of a third person trailing behind them, merely heading forward and backward in a frantic rush, and soon reached near the city walls. However, at this moment, a small detachment of magical guards was approaching them, just patrolling to this very spot. Each of these magical soldiers wore black armor and carried red spears several zhang long; the leader, in addition, rode a beast resembling a two-headed mountain goat. Upon seeing this, the green glow ahead momentarily paused its flight, yet did not immediately retreat. Instead, it turned a corner, relying on its skill in concealment to glide smoothly past the guards. The second figure, flying after, seemed afraid of losing sight of the first, slightly adjusted its flight path, closely following the trajectory of the one ahead, without attempting to avoid them. Two streaks of light, fully concealed by the secret technique, transformed into a transparent form, utterly indistinguishable to the naked eye. Had it been a regular magical guard, it would have been unlikely to detect their presence, allowing them to pass gracefully through the area unimpeded. However, just as the green light flickered and passed by the patrol squad ahead, a sharp cry suddenly erupted from the leading guard, followed by a silver filament shooting out and truly striking the invisible green glow. This leading guard was equipped with a top-tier magical artifact capable of self-sensing! The previously concealed glow instantly wavered and revealed itself. The other guards were startled by this sudden development, but quickly reacted, raising their long spears and delivering a flurry of slashing blows with their blade tips, covering a distance of several zhang. The leading guard, in turn, raised his hand high into the air, launching a black streak of energy. A piercing, high-pitched cry burst forth, echoing through the heavens. "Not good!" A startled, angry cry rang out within the green glow, and suddenly, a figure within shimmered and wavered. Under a barrage of flashing blade strokes, the green orb was cleaved into more than a dozen fragments—yet within, there was nothing but empty space, no trace of the figure remaining. The leading mage-soldier clearly stood apart from the others, swiftly reacting and drawing his beast companion around. At thirty paces beyond their group, a ripple of energy surged through the void, and a streak of green light pierced forth, darting swiftly toward the nearby city walls. "Halt him!" With fury in his voice, the leading mage-soldier roared, then suddenly struck the head of his beast with a powerful palm. "Pffft!" Two sharp sounds followed as the beast rocked its head, and two blue electric arcs burst forth, swiftly arching to the back of the distant green figure and delivering a powerful slash. Upon hearing the sound, the figure among the azure light merely reached out, palm up, and drew a swirling, misty green aura around themselves. Two azure arcs plunged into the rosy light with a resonant roar, yet no further sounds followed—seeming entirely ineffective. The green figure, once its body glowed brightly, instantly vanished in a flash of jade-green light. The other magical guards who had been advancing to join them paused in surprise. The leading mage-soldier, startled and indignant, urged his great beast forward to pursue. But at that moment, a sharp cry rang out from his body, and a silver filament shot out, arching to one side. Suddenly, a low, cold exhalation echoed through the air, and a streak of crimson materialized. The silver filament struck the crimson, rebounded with a crisp sound, and then the crimson streak vanished into the void. "Impossible! This power—!" the leading mage-soldier exclaimed, only to falter mid-sentence as his face paled and a thought struck him. Yet at the same time, the great beast beneath them, which had been about to surge forward, suddenly grew still and remained motionless. "Lord Commander, shall we pursue them? The guards on that side may not be able to contain these two who have violated the decree." Other magical guards, witnessing this, were equally puzzled. One of them hesitated before cautiously asking, "Shall we?" "Alright," the leading guard said, his face shifting several times before finally managing a faint smile. "These two are truly powerful—beyond our reach. Let them go." Upon hearing this, the other guards all expressed surprise. How could such a proud and lofty commander, so accustomed to judging others with such high standards, offer such a judgment to two figures so unfamiliar that even their outlines had not yet been clearly seen? Just as the magical guards were pondering this, the two figures had already swiftly slipped out of the city walls, moving through the commotion and noise at the city gate. The seals arrayed atop the city walls seemed to vanish entirely, offering no resistance whatsoever to either of them. Han Li was momentarily astonished, yet even after concealing himself, he slipped past the leading magical guard without any hindrance. The silver thread, which had previously proven exceptionally effective, showed no reaction to Han Li, who stood mere steps away. After several graceful movements, Han Li reached the city wall and, with a slight shift of his body, seamlessly vanished through the seals without a sound.
