When the name Germain Spalro was mentioned, every member seated at either end of the bronze long table turned their gaze toward the one sitting at the very bottom—the "World." No one spoke. No one interjected. They all, to some extent, knew that Germain Spalro, this eccentric adventurer, had once again accomplished a major feat by defeating the "Duke of Hell," Ludewil, but "Justice" Odile did not consider this the primary reason for Germain's current mental instability. Their quiet demeanor instantly clarified to "Stars" Leonard a fact: every member of the Tarot Circle knew that "World" meant Germain Spalro. Klein's disguise had been flawless... yet why had he chosen to reveal Germain Spalro's identity to the others? In such a gathering, wasn't it the very norm to remain concealed? As Leonard pondered this, he heard the voice of the "World," slightly blurred and strained, asking in a hoarse tone: "What clues has MI9 gathered?"
"The Trial" replied with no embarrassment over having compromised Military Intelligence, calmly stating: "They've confirmed that the identity of Germain Spalro is forged, and the origin of that forgery lies precisely in Beckettland." Indeed, he had previously been known as Sherlock Moriarty, who had transitioned into Germain Spalro upon leaving Beckettland—yet even Sherlock Moriarty was not his true identity. Subconsciously, Leonard glanced around, noticing that while the others were not deeply surprised, they also did not seem to suddenly grasp it, which led him to believe they only had a superficial understanding of Klein. Under Klein's influence, the "world" Germain Spalro chuckled gently and responded to the information provided by the "Trial" lady: "You needn't worry about this matter."
To him, the only way to unravel who exactly the false identity of Germaine Sparrow had been passed to was to either capture the "Mysterious Queen" Bernadette or secure Sharon's intelligence from her—clearly, this was a task of such difficulty that it seemed almost impossible. In contrast, someone like Leonard, who began with cases involving Sherlock Moriarty, could uncover far more. Since MI9 had chosen the wrong path, Crane welcomed their relentless pursuit down that route.
"As a competent 'psychologist,' she certainly wouldn't inform the other members of the Tarot Circle about the psychological issues arising in the 'World,' merely wanting to confirm whether they would still attend the 'Rune Charitable Scholarship Fund'—that way, she could observe them closely in the real world and conduct better follow-up visits. She openly mentioned Daven Thonard because all the original gathering members were already aware of the matter, and the 'Star' gentleman clearly knew the 'World' gentleman well, thanks to Fother's prior notification. Ah... hearing Miss Justice's words, Leonard nearly couldn't believe his ears, momentarily feeling dazed. Could it really be that Cline Moretti is none other than Daven Thonard? I personally asked Daven Thonard about Cline Moretti. No, it's impossible—Daven Thonard is an immortal creature who survived the Fourth Age! His behavior at that time fully proves it! The old man said exactly the same."
At this moment, Leonard was completely unable to control the shifts in his emotions, instinctively resisting the facts pointed out by the "Justice" lady. If he were not currently in his star-spirit form, he was certain his facial expression would be quite obvious—alternating between red and pale, and then between pale and red. Across from him, Hugh also lifted his head, stunned, gazing at the "World" gentleman seated at the very bottom of the bronze table. Was he Doane Thénardier? Was Doane Thénardier indeed Germán Spáro? I've even received commissions from his butler... I've protected him... I've sympathized with him... And yet, he could easily crush me with a single hand. Hugh then turned back to glare at Fleur. As for the matter of the "World" gentleman, I simply couldn't elaborate much—I could only offer a brief mention. Fleur, the "Magician," looked down, her eyes betraying a quiet sense of unease, and murmured without speaking.
The figures of Alchemist and Gardener read between the lines: The Lady of Judgment and the Lady of the Magician had met in the real world; the Lady of Judgment had crossed paths with Daven Touta, though she didn’t know he was Gérard Spalro. As a seasoned observer, Audrey was undoubtedly aware of the unusual presence of the Star and the Judgment—she realized now that she had been assuming too much. Audrey, you need to reflect! she thought to herself, with a touch of embarrassment, and before the gentleman of the World could speak, she stepped in to clarify: "Daven Touta is a public identity—sometimes the gentleman of the World, sometimes the gentleman of the Fool, and sometimes another of the attendants."
Ah, that makes perfect sense!
Leonard, stirred by the spark of inspiration, instantly grasped the explanation offered by the lady of justice, and in doing so, began to understand several things: The period when the entry to the Charnel Gate of Saint Samuel's Church was made—some time before—was likely Donatien Tang-Des, who was then probably Klein. Earlier and later entries, however, belonged to the "Fool" himself, and his other followers... Ah, the "Death Magistrate"? Indeed, a creature of immortality surviving into the Fourth Age—old friend of the elder. Perhaps another of my unknown followers, yet one of no low standing. Hmm, what does "other followers" mean? Does that imply that Klein himself is also one of the "Fool"’s followers? That explains why the "Fool" said he came to this gathering, joining it, through a path different from mine—since all of them were followers, blessed by the "Fool" and sharing a similarly ancient aura, the elder had failed to recognize Donatien Tang-Des as a different person playing the role.
This also explains my earlier question. As a Custodian, Germán Spalro's identity is not something that needs to be kept confidential... For Miss Judgment, whether or not Doun Tanghates is a public figure, or whether she is indeed Germán Spalro, is entirely irrelevant. Her strong reaction earlier stemmed from a mix of embarrassment and irritation upon realizing the truth and reflecting on the various thoughts and emotions she had at the time.
With the atmosphere now restored, Kline took a deep breath in his mind and guided "World" Germán Spalro to answer Miss Justice's question:
"Yes.
At that time, there might be certain matters that will require your assistance."
As he spoke the second part, "World" glanced briefly at Miss Justice, the Magician, Miss Judgment, Miss Star, and Miss Moon.
Was he planning something in Beckland? Audrey instantly grasped the meaning behind "World"’s words—both excited and slightly concerned at the same time.
She was excited about joining a secret initiative where, on the surface, participants seemed entirely uncooperative, unfamiliar with one another—something she had never experienced but always longed for. Yet she worried whether this might threaten the stability of Beckland, whether it might endanger the innocent. As for her own risks, she wasn’t overly concerned; she believed the tasks assigned to her by the "World" gentleman were likely to take place in peripheral regions, either involving the provision of critical intelligence or delivering decisive misdirection to targets, without requiring direct combat involvement. "Moon" Emlyn was the second member to fully grasp the "World's" underlying intent, a realization stemming from his innate aversion to hassle. Whether this would prove quite troublesome... he furrowed his brow, but said nothing.
As the other members gradually came to realization, the "Hangings" Aljer glanced steadily at "The World" Germaine Spalro and then said, "I've recently received intelligence that the Archbishop of the Night Church, Inis Zangwer, who defected, was killed in Xibian. At the time, he had already become a half-god. The sealed artifact he stole, '0–08,' is now in the hands of someone—though we haven't yet identified who. What's certain is that the Night Church personnel were responsible for clearing the battlefield."
The "Hangings" is indeed well-informed...only a few days ago...the Church should have maintained strict confidentiality...yet perhaps other forces also arrived at that square at the time. "Stars" Leonard paused, but said nothing.
Audrey and the others had never heard of this news before, and could only gauge its significance from terms such as "Archbishop," "0–08," and "Half-God"—terms that clearly indicated the matter was substantial. Yet, it seemed unrelated to their own concerns and lacked a compelling spark, so it failed to generate much enthusiasm. Among them, Gauthier, the "Hermit," who had a deeper understanding of the "0-tier sealed artifacts," intended to return to the real world and exchange information on this matter with the "Mystic Queen" and the senior leadership of the Moes Monastic Order.
Then, they heard a deep, resonant figure emerging from the gray mist chuckle, saying, "Thus, the age has changed."
The age has changed? Could the matter of Inz. Zangwei truly be so significant and pivotal? Though it involved a "Level 0" seal object... The "Turner" Aljer, who had shared the news, was surprised that the "Fool" had given it such high praise and found himself at a loss, unsure of where to begin connecting the dots.
Leonard, the "Star" who had participated in Inz. Zangwei's affairs, felt the same way. He knew how crucial and formidable a Level 0 seal object could be, yet he had never imagined that the events of that day would fundamentally alter the age.
While the others—especially Audrey, the "Justice"—were astonished and bewildered, they all became more alert, even the "Sun" Deric, who could no longer help but adopt a posture of eager anticipation.
The "Fool" Klein glanced around, half-smiling, half-sighing, and said: "Adam is drawing closer to the divine seat."
