In early autumn hunting, though not as splendid as in late autumn, the game animals are still well-fed and robust.
Qin Feng and Su Wu each carry a double-barreled hunting rifle on their right arms. The barrels are long but lack sights—simple, bare tubes. The advantage of this type of rifle is that if the first shot misses, a second shot can be quickly taken. However, if the second shot also misses, the hunters will have to watch helplessly as the game escapes. This adds excitement to the hunt while simultaneously giving the animals a chance to survive.
"Let's settle on our wager—should we base it on the quantity of game caught, or on the quality?" Qin Feng asked.
"Here's an idea—neither quantity nor quality. Small game, such as rabbits or foxes, counts one point; medium-sized game, like deer or boars, counts three points; large game, such as wild deer or wolves, counts five points; and exceptionally large game, such as elk or bears, counts ten points," Su Wu suggested.
He nodded, scanning the surroundings. "Are there any large animals here?"
"Yes, there have been black bears and wild cattle hunted here," said Miss Su. "Though that was quite some time ago—my father even once shot a leopard over ten years ago, but now it's completely vanished!"
Qin, the young gentleman, shrugged. He had expected foreign wildlife conservation to be more advanced than in China, but it seemed to be no different. Nothing particularly impressive.
He looked up, pointing toward the sky. "What about birds? How can we count on bird sightings?"
Miss Su thought for a moment. It was indeed difficult to catch flying birds in winter—though they might land on trees, their small size made them hard to aim at. So she generously added, "Even five points would be good. If you feel confident in your shooting, by all means, go ahead and shoot everything you can!"
Hitting flying birds with a double-barreled hunting gun was, in essence, a waste of ammunition.
"Five points, then. Well, I'd like to try my shooting first."
He smoothly inserted two bullets, closed the action, grasped the fore-end of the stock with his right hand, raised the muzzle, and pulled the trigger twice.
Boom. Boom.
The two shots pierced the sky, followed immediately by a cry of distress—both storks landed right where they were.
"Even this works? Are you sure you're not just guessing?" Su Wu asked, her eyes wide.
"Then go ahead and guess yourself," he said, making a mockingly polite gesture.
Su Wu shook her head, indicating she wasn't confident. The two birds had been flying hundreds of meters away in the sky since they arrived—so far away and so high that, from their vantage point, they appeared merely as small black beads against the sky.
Qin Feng hadn't even taken the time to aim precisely; he'd just casually fired and managed to bring them down. And he'd claimed it was a test shot—how would anyone believe that?
"Hey, I'm just lucky—I didn't even notice. How many rabbits do you think you'll need to hit before you can match my record?" he said, now even more condescending.
"Fine, don't count that!"
"Su, the lady, started being stubborn: 'You said it was a test of shooting—since it's a test, it doesn't count!' 'You're tough,' Qin Feng didn't bother arguing. After all, girls are naturally sweet and unreasonable. Su asked curiously, 'So, how exactly did you manage to hit the target? Teach me!' Qin, the young lord, sighed impatiently: 'I just guessed. How am I supposed to teach you?' 'Hmph, such a petty one! Today, I'm determined to outshine you in the number of shots!' Su raised her chin, pulled out two bullets from her bag, and smoothly loaded them into the chamber. Qin Feng immediately retaliated: 'Then go ahead and try! If I were you, I'd just gracefully concede and get ready to sit down below, heh!' 'Today, I'm going to be right here on top—don't think you'll get me down there!' she insisted. Heh, no matter where you end up—on top or below—comfort is always mine. I'll give you one chance, one go-up, just to see how you handle it, wahoo!"
As the two gradually ventured deeper into the hunting grounds, the number of prey animals increased, though most were small creatures like rabbits. Su Wu shot a few before losing interest. Her shooting skills were decent—out of ten shots, she could typically hit five or six. With a rifle equipped with a sight, that number would rise to nearly all. Qin Feng, however, had not fired a single shot, and these smaller animals failed to capture his attention at all. Suddenly, a large white fox burst out from the side, its body and long tail stretching nearly seventy to eighty centimeters. "I'll take it..."
Crack—before Su Wu could raise her rifle, the fox had already fallen to the dry, yellow grass, and Qin Feng's barrel emitted a plume of white smoke. The bullet struck the fox's neck, a wound that would not compromise the quality of the fur. "Don't mind, this is my gift to you."
"He smiled and said, 'While the bodies are still warm, hurry and peel off the skin—don't you have a leatherworker in your family? Have him make you a scarf!' Su, the young lady, offered a gentle kiss: 'Haha, I've been thinking of just that! Thank you!' 'What's there to thank me for? Aren't we already quite familiar with each other?' Qin Feng embraced her slender waist and kissed her deeply, laughing. 'If you truly feel uncomfortable, why not be a bit more passionate on the bed? Let's try a few more positions—hmm!' 'Oh, how tiresome! You keep talking about all these intimate things—can't you even act like a proper gentleman?' The young lady's cheeks flushed slightly. A gentleman, is he not supposed to make love? The two of them continued to deepen their connection, and more and more 'prey' were added to their list. Su Wu gradually gave in. She had been tirelessly pursuing her targets, only to barely overtake Qin Feng in the final score—yet he always managed to casually score a few points, bringing him back into the lead. In terms of the number of shots fired, Su Wu's count was ten times that of
Yet the score remained tied, which she found hard to accept. Though she didn't say so, she had already lost the battle in her heart, for as long as Qin Feng wished, he could easily pull ahead with a large margin. A small stream appeared ahead, and the two of them naturally agreed to take a break. From among the game animals, they selected a few well-fed, robust ones. The task of peeling and gutting them naturally fell to Qin's younger brother. After washing the meat clean at the riverbank, he placed it on a rack to roast. Within fifteen minutes, he seasoned it with various spices, and the aroma soon filled the air. He then threaded potatoes, green peppers, and other vegetables onto sticks, roasting them alongside the meat. The two of them enjoyed their meal heartily. After being well-fed and thoroughly satisfied, Su Wu stretched lazily, her graceful figure clearly revealed. She lay back on the grass, looking utterly content. Qin's younger brother, meanwhile, began to gulp down water. As the old saying goes, "When one is well-fed, one thinks of love." With his stomach full, what else could he do but indulge in the company of women?
He transformed into a wolf and leaped past him. Perhaps sensing the growing passion rising within him, Lady Su struggled and exclaimed, "Isn't this the countryside? Isn't it so open and spacious that people would surely see us!" Qin, deeply engrossed, could hardly stop, replied, "Then let them see us!"
