Chapter Six: The Unnamed Technique

Back to Chapter List
"Wake up! Wake up!" A faint, distant voice, as though coming from beyond the heavens, startled Han Li from his deep sleep. When he opened his eyes, a large, close-fitting face was pressed right before him. Han Li was startled and stepped back slightly, only then recognizing the face—belonging to another young boy, Zhang Tie. "Hurry and eat something," Zhang Tie said, handing him two steaming buns. "Where did you find these?" Han Li paused, then accepted the food. "There's a large kitchen near the valley. I saw everyone going there to get meals, so I went too and got one. After eating, I realized you hadn't eaten yet, so I went back and fetched two more buns for you," Zhang Tie smiled warmly at Han Li. "Thank you so much, Zhang brother," Han Li said, touched. Seeing Zhang Tie look noticeably more mature than himself, he naturally called him "Zhang brother" without thinking. "Nothing at all. I've always been used to doing things at home. If I don't do something now and then, I just feel... a bit uneasy. Whenever you need help with anything, just let me know—I don't have much else to offer, but I still have my strength." Zhang Tie seemed a bit embarrassed, and his words came out somewhat stammered. Han Li hadn't eaten breakfast or lunch, and was now a bit hungry. He finished a few mouthfuls of a steamed bun and then another one, and in just a short while, two large buns were completely gone. "It's getting late now. Let's go see Doctor Mo." Han Li belched a few times, looked out the window at the setting sun, and checked the time—he thought it was time to visit Doctor Mo. Zhang Tie didn't have any objections and followed Han Li into the room where Doctor Mo was. In the room, bookshelves stood along the walls, filled with stacks of various books neatly arranged. "Doctor Mo!" "Doctor Mo!" "... Master Mo was seated close to the imperial chair, holding a book and reading intently, as if completely unaware of the two visitors' arrival or their greetings. Han Li and the other two, being children, felt at a loss when Master Mo paid no attention to them. They stood there, unsure of what to do, simply waiting. It wasn't until Han Li's feet began to tingle from standing still that Master Mo finally set down his book on the side table, calmly examined the two of them, then picked up a cup of tea, sipped a few small sips before finally speaking with a composed tone: 'From today on, you two will be my designated apprentices. I will teach you the fundamentals of gathering herbs and preparing medicines. Perhaps I will also teach you some medical skills for treating patients. But I will not teach you any martial arts.' Master Mo remained expressionless, then set the cup of tea down again." "I have a set of oral techniques for cultivating health and wellness that I'd like to teach you both. Though they won't guarantee victory in battle, they will certainly strengthen your bodies. If you truly wish to learn some martial arts skills, you're welcome to go to the instructors and study under them—there's no objection from me. However, after six months, I will assess only your progress in mastering these techniques. Should you fail, you will still be sent to the outer gate to serve as outer gate disciples. Have you understood clearly?" The Doctor's tone suddenly became serious, indicating his deep regard for these techniques. "Understood," both Han Li and his companion replied in unison. "You may now go. Come back tomorrow morning." The Doctor waved them off, then picked up the book and began reading again. Before leaving, Han Li glanced at the book in the Doctor's hands, but regretted that he couldn't read the characters. He only knew the title was three large black characters. Yet, though he could not read them, they could clearly recognize him. Stepping out of Mo Da Fu's room, Han Li couldn't help but gently exhale, having been so tense inside—ever since he entered, he had barely dared to breathe, his mind tightly绷ed. Now, once outside, he felt immediately at ease and restored to his normal self. Subsequently, in the morning, Doctor Mo imparted to them some medical knowledge, and in the afternoon, they were sent to a library to study with other young disciples, learning the basics of written characters, the twelve regular meridians, the eight extraordinary meridians, and the locations of acupoints throughout the body, as well as practicing standing stances and basic martial techniques by hitting straw figures. After one month, Han Li and his companion finally separated from the other young disciples, no longer having time to learn other things, as Doctor Mo began teaching them a set of unnamed oral formulas. Practicing this set of formulas occupied most of their time, and Doctor Mo strictly ordered them not to disclose the formulas to anyone else; should they leak the secret, he would severely discipline them and expel them from the academy. During this period, Han Li gained a detailed understanding of the Seven-Perfected Sect and Doctor Mo through conversations with others. The sect had a senior master, Wang Lu, a direct descendant of the Seventh-Perfected Master, serving as the head of the main branch, along with three deputy heads, dividing the sect into two major parts: the outer and inner sects. The outer sect comprises four branches: Fei Niao Hall, Ju Bao Hall, Si Hai Hall, and Wai Ren Hall. The inner sect has four branches: Bai Duan Hall, Qi Jie Hall, Gong Feng Hall, and Xue Ren Hall. In addition, there is a Grand Elder Council, which ranks directly beneath the main gate master and stands on equal footing with the other deputy masters. Originally, Doctor Mo was not a disciple of the Qi Xuan Sect. Several years ago, when Master Wang Lu was on an outing and unexpectedly fell into an ambush set by his rivals, who launched a coordinated assault, sustaining serious injuries and facing life-threatening conditions. The attendants were at a loss. Just then, Doctor Mo, the physician, stepped in and, through his skillful treatment, restored Master Wang’s health, saving his life. Master Wang naturally expressed deep gratitude. Later, upon learning that Doctor Mo not only possessed exceptional medical expertise but also a solid martial arts foundation, he invited him to join the sect. Subsequently, the sect selected a small valley deep in the mountains and constructed a dedicated residence for him, enabling Doctor Mo to settle in and establish himself as a Grand Elder of the Gong Feng Hall. During his time at the Qi Xuan Sect, although the disciples had never seen his martial prowess or knew the strength of his skills, they deeply respected him because of his outstanding medical expertise, which had saved numerous lives within the sect. Despite his often expressionless demeanor and sparse words, he was held in high esteem by the disciples.
