Chapter Twenty-Five: The Willow Grows into a Grove

Back to Chapter List
Another night passed. Early in the morning, Han Li just woke up and headed toward the herb garden to check if there had been any changes in the several medicinal plants. Before even stepping into the herb field, he suddenly caught the rich, fragrant scents of several herbs. Han Li was slightly taken aback, but then a thought struck him: "Could it be…?" He quickened his pace and finally reached the plants emitting strong fragrances. Were these the very same herbs from yesterday? Han Li couldn't believe his eyes. He slapped his slightly drowsy face vigorously, continuing until he felt some pain. "The Huanglong herb leaves have turned a deep purple, the Kuling lilies have opened nine petals, and the Wanguyue fruit's rind has turned black! Hah! Hah!" Han Li could no longer contain himself. Even though he usually remained calm and composed, he burst out laughing, looking up at the sky. "Now I've truly hit good fortune! In just one night, these herbs that had only been cultivated for one or two years have all transformed into herbs that seem to be several decades old. The color of their leaves, the shape of their fruits, and the fragrance of their petals are exactly like those of rare herbs that have matured over many years." Han Li carefully examined the herbs once more, confirming that they matched precisely with what was described in the medicinal texts—indeed, they were genuine, mature, and precious herbs. "If I can continue to accelerate the maturation of these herbs in this way, won't I then have access to as much rare medicine as I need whenever I desire? Moreover, any herbs I can't use myself can be sold to others, and thus I'll surely recover a substantial sum of silver." Han Li could no longer contain his excitement and began to think wildly. As he thought more and more, his enthusiasm grew, and he felt as though he had truly discovered a treasure. Suddenly, he rolled around on the ground several times, completely losing his usual composure and behaving just like a young boy of about fifteen, expressing his excitement in his natural, youthful way. It wasn't until several hours later that Han Li regained full awareness, his mind sharp as ever, and began to ponder the challenges ahead in consuming this unexpectedly large gift that had fallen from the sky. First, although the herbs appeared satisfactory in appearance, their actual medicinal properties still needed verification. After all, they had absorbed those strange liquids to transform into their current form—how could one be sure they hadn't developed any altered components? He had personally witnessed the tragic fate of those rabbits yesterday, so caution remained essential. Second, the green liquid from the mysterious vial had already been used up; he wasn't certain whether any further unusual phenomena would occur, such as the continued formation of droplets. It might be a one-time occurrence, so he would need to check again later that evening. Should both of these aspects prove satisfactory, he would still need to thoroughly master the specific details and procedures of this remarkable tonic herb, fully controlling the extraordinary method itself. After careful consideration, Han Li arrived at several key issues that needed to be resolved—without solving these challenges, this grand opportunity would remain merely a vision, like flowers in mist or moonlight on water. Once everything was thought through, Han Li began taking action. After completing all these tasks, Han Li anxiously waited for the arrival of night, finding the passage of time to be incredibly long. Finally, night came as he had hoped. As soon as it grew dark, Han Li rushed outdoors, took out the small bottle from his bag and placed it on the ground, then focused intently on watching its changes. One hour passed—no movement. Two hours passed—still nothing. Three hours went by... As time moved on, Han Li's growing sense of unease deepened, and he waited until dawn, yet the bottle showed no signs of change. He grew completely discouraged—was the bottle truly a one-time consumable, or had he missed something crucial? With renewed determination, Han Li surveyed his surroundings. "Nothing seems out of the ordinary, except that it's a bit dark," he murmured to himself. Suddenly, he paused. He lifted his head sharply and looked up at the sky—dark and dense, with nothing visible. The phrase "It's getting dark" suddenly woke up Han Li. "Could it be that, since it's overcast, there are no stars or moon?" Han Li recalled that in the past, whenever the bottle had undergone changes, it had always been on clear days when the sky was unobstructed and stars and moon were visible. Today, however, the sky was overcast, with thick clouds covering everything. Han Li felt a sense of clarity and spirit lift slightly. Noticing that the sky was now beginning to lighten, he concluded that nothing significant would happen tonight, so he stored the bottle and decided to try again once the weather cleared. Yet, to Han Li's surprise, over the next fifteen days, the sky not only failed to clear but instead poured a continuous, light drizzle—this weather persisted right up to the present. Watching the soft, gentle rain outside, Han Li grew increasingly restless and impatient. The more he urged the weather to clear, the more relentlessly it rained, showing no sign of stopping. He turned back to look at the two rabbits sheltering inside the room, still lively and active—this only deepened Han Li's frustration. Since these two rabbits began eating food mixed with medicinal herbs, not only had they shown no signs of illness, but they had actually become more spirited than ever before. Over these past ten days, Han Li had carefully observed them every day, confirming that they exhibited no symptoms of poisoning, and in fact, had grown stronger and more robust due to the nourishing, bone-strengthening medicine. Yet, despite this positive development, Han Li felt neither relieved nor joyful. Instead, he found himself filled with a sense of uncertainty and anxiety, unable to settle his mind. To him, the very question of whether the bottle could regenerate its green liquid had become the central issue of all these concerns. And now, with this persistent, troublesome weather that had plagued him for so long, the mystery remained unresolved—how could Han Li possibly remain so deeply troubled?
