Chapter Fifty-Eight: Immortals in the Dao of Cultivation

Back to Chapter List
"Phew! To be honest, I'm also a victim." Yu Zichong opened his mouth right away, eager to win Han Li's sympathy and deliberately distanced himself from his relationship with Mo Doctor, but seeing Han Li remain unmoved, he continued: "I was originally a wandering cultivator..." Yu Zichong then calmly and thoroughly recounted his own background and the full course of events—carefully framing himself as a helpless figure who had been forced into collaboration by Mo Doctor, and shifting all the blame onto the now-deceased Mo Doctor. While Han Li naturally didn't fully believe his account, by combining Mo Doctor's own statements, he was able to piece together the truth with reasonable confidence. By filtering out potential falsehoods in Yu Zichong's narrative, Han Li gained a clear overall understanding of what had transpired. Previously, the stories Master Mo had told about the period before he was betrayed and began seeking methods to restore his abilities were all true, and there was no need to deceive him. However, the account of discovering a rare book in a mysterious place, from which he found the means to restore his abilities—that was entirely fabricated. This fabrication was entirely due to Yu Zichong, who enabled Master Mo to recover his strength, yet also through Yu Zichong, he now suffers the curse. Of course, it would be wonderful if they could find some rare herbs and bring them back to refine immortal pills—though he knew this hope was quite slim. Still, it was ultimately a matter of luck; perhaps, just perhaps, his character would suddenly blossom and he’d stumble upon a fortunate break! With such promising aspirations, the young Yu Zichong, only in his twenties, entered the mundane world as described by the cultivators. If things continued this way, although the great path of cultivation seemed out of reach and Yu Zichong would never attain immortality, he could still expect a long life and a prosperous, wealthy existence—this was not uncommon among cultivators who had not yet established their foundation, though it was not frequent either. It was certainly nothing extraordinary. Yet, either by the grace of heaven or due to a fortunate turn of events, one day several years later, while casually strolling through the streets, Yu Zichong happened to stop by a pharmacy, where he unexpectedly discovered a rare herb known as Blood Spirit Grass. This herb resembled ordinary red flowering plants, so the storekeeper, unfamiliar with its value, had placed it alongside them. Upon seeing it, Yu Zichong was naturally delighted—this herb greatly enhanced his prospects of breaking through his current cultivation bottleneck, reigniting his passion for cultivation. At that moment, he immediately intended to pay for it. Unforeseen complications arose, however, when another cultivator entered the store and also spotted the herb. Naturally, neither wished to miss this opportunity, and the two soon engaged in a heated dispute over the item. Upon seeing them, the shopkeeper immediately saw potential value, offering that whoever contributed more silver would claim the herb. Since Yu Zichong had slightly more funds, he naturally secured the precious medicine. Yet he was not dull—he knew the other would not rest easily. That very night, he fled his dwelling and headed toward his family's estate, but even halfway there, he was caught up by the other party, resulting in a fierce battle. The latter possessed far greater magical prowess, and Yu Zichong, though he bled profusely, was ultimately defeated. Still, he was unwilling to part with the medicine he had just secured. With a determined breath, he activated a life-saving talisman he had brought from his family, employing a secret strategy of mutual sacrifice to drive the opponent back and finally escaped. By then, however, he was seriously wounded. Amid this precarious situation, he encountered Mo Doctor, who had also come out in search of a healing remedy. It was also fate that Yu Zichong had to bear this. Though he had wandered the world for several years, he possessed no experience in dealing with the customs and expectations of the gentry and scholars of the martial world. Upon observing the condition of Mo Doctor, he spontaneously mentioned the remedy he had, inadvertently revealing that he himself carried a precious medicine. Now, he had truly brought upon himself a perilous fate. For Mo Doctor, who was already anxious and desperate, searching tirelessly for a cure, heard this news and could not help but press him hard, pleading with every means to secure the remedy. While the medicine Yu Zichong described was not as rare as the Blood-Spirit Grass, it still consisted of a dozen precious herbs, painstakingly prepared by the cultivators through the expenditure of considerable vital energy. It was now in short supply on his own. With his own body in such a state of severe injury, he held the medicine in especially high regard, and would surely not willingly bestow it upon a mere commoner, regarded as nothing more than a mere insect. Master Mo, seeing that even with his humble appeals he could not secure the medicine, grew furious and angry, and thus resolved to take matters into his own hands. He secretly followed the young man to a secluded spot and administered a carefully prepared poison behind his back. Normally, such a poison should not have any effect on Yu Zichong; yet the secret formula Master Mo used—of which even he himself was not fully aware of its potency—proved effective, and succeeded in securing his victory. With Yu Zichong already severely wounded, the added assault of the poison struck directly at his heart, leaving him barely breathing. Only then did Master Mo appear, grandly and confidently, beginning to search through Yu Zichong's belongings. Upon witnessing this, Yu Zichong immediately grasped the full circumstances and, in a surge of rage, summoned the "Blood Arrows and Ghost Souls Spell," transforming all his vital essence into a powerful blood incantation that he forcefully expelled toward Master Mo's head. Then, his spirit detached from his body and gently drifted out, leaving behind only the fading form of the flesh. After his spirit detached itself, Yu Zichong realized he had overlooked the necessity of preparing a vessel or instrument for his spirit to inhabit. With no alternative, he had to enter the body of Mo Doctor, thus averting the danger of his spirit's extinction. Mo Doctor, drenched in blood from head to foot, was initially startled, but upon finding no abnormalities, he soon dismissed the incident. Relying on his knowledge of herbal medicine, he identified the several pills on the body of the deceased and joyfully consumed them. Indeed, the pills proved effective—Mo Doctor's strength was fully restored. Overjoyed, he gathered the items he had recovered from the body, along with a scroll of the Changle功 formula that he could not yet comprehend, and set out to return to Lanzhou, determined to seek vengeance, reclaim his honor, and revive his former glory.
