Chapter 696: Breaking the Ban and Unfolding the Scroll

Back to Chapter List
Han Li clenched his palms, reciting a series of incantations. In a moment, the several banners facing the crystalline wall arranged themselves into an unusual pattern—seeming chaotic at first glance, yet subtly imbued with an underlying mystery. At that very instant, a low, resonant chant emerged from Han Li's mouth, followed by the precise execution of several hand seals, each one striking accurately upon the banners. Immediately, the banners trembled, flashing in vibrant hues of color, and streams of light surged simultaneously from each banner, weaving them together into an intricate and peculiar magical array. Wang Tiangu and Nan Long Hou, both accomplished in the art of array construction, furrowed their brows. They found the formation familiar yet had never witnessed it before, prompting them to quietly ponder its significance. Yet Han Li appeared unwilling to allow the other cultivators to further analyze the subtle intricacies of the array. With a single commanding exhalation, a brilliant, dazzling white light suddenly erupted from his entire body. Others who were intently gazing at the spell array were suddenly startled and blinked out of surprise. Yet at the same time, these seasoned elders felt a sudden shock, subtly channeling their spiritual energy into their eyes, and promptly reopened them. To their amazement, they now found the array flags embedded seamlessly within the crystalline wall, as if they had always been part of the wall itself. This development filled both Nanlong Marquis and the white-robed elder with great delight, greatly strengthening their confidence in Han Li. Wang Tiangu's expression slightly changed, but quickly settled back to its usual composure. As for Wang Chan, standing behind him, the two eyes on his mask revealed a complex mix of astonishment, and he stood motionless, momentarily stunned. Yan Ruxian, however, furrowed her brows, glanced at the spell array within the crystal wall, blinked her beautiful eyes, and a hint of puzzlement appeared on her delicate face. At this moment, Han Li stepped forward several paces to the crystal wall, placed both hands upon its surface, and emitted a soft, pale blue glow from each of his ten fingers. At the same time, the magical array within the crystalline walls seemed to respond in resonance, bursting forth with a radiant glow of five colors. This light grew increasingly brilliant, eventually filling the entire crystalline structure with breathtaking splendor. As everyone on the scene was absorbed in the spectacle, Han Li withdrew his hand from the crystal wall, stepped slightly, and arrived at the adjacent wall. After gazing at it for a while, he retrieved a set of array flags and established a magical array identical to the one previously set—without altering its original configuration. Following a brief flash of white light, he instantly embedded this array into the crystal wall. Thanks to their heightened vigilance, despite the intense luminosity, the southern lords and their companions, protected by their spiritual energy, clearly observed Han Li's seamless insertion of the array flags into the wall. They were left marveling at his effortless ability to penetrate the crystal barrier. Han Li completed this process on all four walls using the same method, naturally taking a considerable amount of time—nearly half an hour. Yet, the other cultivators showed no sign of impatience. It is no surprise that breaking such a magnificent ancient seal would take a considerable amount of time. Indeed, this was precisely the calm and composed manner of Han Li, which instilled great confidence in all present. Otherwise, neither Nanlong Hou nor the white-robed elder would have allowed Han Li to waste time so freely. After completing all these preparations, Han Li walked to the center of the hall. With one hand, he flipped out a jade-green array disk. Then, without hesitation, he cast several intricate hand seals into the disk. At that moment, the shimmering light within the array disk and the four crystalline walls began to flicker and pulse irregularly. Initially chaotic, the rhythm gradually evolved until all the lights rose and contracted simultaneously, as though they were one unified whole. "Break," Han Li said, not even glancing at the surrounding glimmers. He slightly bowed his head and softly uttered the character "Break." Instantly, the light surged upward, emitting a sharp, resonant hum that grew louder and louder, as if a thousand birds were singing in unison. A tremendous roar echoed, and the radiance dispersed, leaving the entire hall suddenly dim and shadowed. Only then did Nanlong Hou and his companions realize that the crystalline walls surrounding them had vanished without a trace, replaced now by ordinary green stone walls. On one of these walls, a stone gate stood, approximately seven to eight zhang high and three to four zhang wide, intricately embedded. According to the late Master Angku's遗嘱, this sanctuary had only two layers of seals. "I'm confident about that," said Nanlong Hou with conviction. He then moved forward without further explanation, gently brushing the stone gate with his long robe, and the gate opened smoothly inward. Seeing this, the last trace of concern among the cultivators vanished completely, and they all followed Nanlong Hou inside. "What in the world is this?" the old woman exclaimed, upon clearly seeing the scene beyond the stone gate. Not only she, but Han Li and the others also looked utterly astonished. Behind the gate lay a vast hall several times larger than the one before, yet in the center of the hall stood a small, elegant pavilion. The pavilion was entirely carved from translucent, shimmering white jade, standing over ten zhang tall with only two stories, yet exquisitely detailed. On the pavilion's gate, several silver characters were inscribed: "Yuji Pavilion." Yet, the construction of such a pavilion within the hall seemed utterly unusual. In front of this "Yuzhi Pavilion," there stands an old incense table, dark and yellowed with age, upon which a silver-white scroll several feet long is respectfully offered. The scroll gleams with a luminous sheen, clearly no ordinary object. Elsewhere, the space is empty and bare, with nothing else present, nor any sign of additional entrances. "Could the treasures be hidden within the pavilion?" everyone thought to themselves. Nanlong Marquis and the elderly man in white exchanged glances, but the Marquis remained still while the elder stepped forward with careful demeanor, approaching the incense table. The old woman and Wang Tiangu were momentarily stirred, yet no one intervened—only observing silently. The elderly man of the Yun surname did not immediately reach out to grasp the scroll. Instead, after a moment of hesitation, he exhaled a cascade of white mist. This mist surged upward, lifting the scroll into the air, where it rolled and spun before suddenly unfolding with a crisp "shh" sound. A figure of a scholar, bearing a long sword and gazing upward, emerged clearly in profile. "Is this the image of the Master Cangkun?" The cold-faced cultivator gazed at the scroll painting, slightly astonished and asked, "Perhaps so. Yet, since this painting is enshrined here, there must be some purpose behind it. It probably isn't anything particularly precious." Wang Tiangu glanced at the jade pavilion with a thoughtful expression, implying something more. "Let me try it out first!" The elderly man with the cloud surname pondered for a moment before slowly replied. Then, he pressed his palms together, forming gestures, and with a flick of his fingers, several red cultivation seals struck the painting. For a while, the embroidered surface shimmered with a silvery glow, but soon returned to its original state, showing no unusual effects. "This is rather odd! Yet it might simply be an ordinary scroll painting!" Observing this, the cloud-named elder hesitated and remarked. "Then, for now, let us set this aside. Once we locate the other treasures, we can decide its proper place. Does anyone have any objections?" Nan Long Hou paused briefly before suggesting, "I have no objections—let us follow your suggestion." "I have no objections either," the elder lady added, "Let us proceed as the esteemed friend has proposed." The old woman glanced at the scroll, smiled warmly, and nodded in agreement. As the others had not yet seen the other treasures, they naturally remained unconcerned. Eventually, the elderly man named Yun carefully folded the scroll and placed it into his storage bag. "Come on! I'm going up to the attic to take a look!" said Nan Long Marquis, his eyes glowing with eager anticipation as he stared at the attic. Upon reaching the small building with the closed gate, the group passed by the altar and came to the entrance. This time, the Marquis pushed the gate with great impatience, and it creaked open with a soft "shh-ting." Before the others could enter, a brilliant glow surged forth, dazzling them for a moment as they struggled to regain their composure. Inside the attic, three slender black wooden stands were arranged on the first floor, each filled with items radiating a striking, commanding brilliance. At this sight, both Nan Long Marquis and his companion, as well as the cultivators Wang Tiangu and others, all beamed with delight. Yet, being seasoned and prudent, none of them made any clumsy or potentially dangerous moves that might have triggered alarm. All of them suppressed their eager excitement and slowly walked into the attic, where they began to take in the treasures displayed on the wooden shelves.
